FAQ For Motorcycle Insurance

By: Christopher Reinhold

Although it has been a legal necessity, if you are to take your motorcycle out on a public road, to own a motorcycle insurance policy for decades, many people are still confused about it and the following are just a few questions that are asked regularly.

Do I Really Need It?

Legally, yes. In general, probably not. Although motorcycle accidents may seem particularly prominent, they are not overly high and most motorcycle owners are safe riders, meaning they will often not need to claim on their insurance policies.

However, this does not mean that a motorcycle insurance policy should not be taken out, as apart from the fact that when it is done so you are fully covered in the event of an accident, it is your legal responsibility to do so and you may lose your license if you fail to produce a valid insurance certificate when requested.

There Are Only Three Options, Right?

Although there are specialist insurance companies who can offer tailored insurance packages to suit individuals, there are three main types of motorbike insurance, known as Third Party, Third Party, Fire and Theft and Fully Comprehensive.

And Does Their Name Do Them Justice?

The names of all three insurance options do, to an extent, explain what is covered by them. Third Party will only cover any third parties who are involved in an accident; Third Party, Fire and Theft will cover the same but will also offer assistance with any fire damage or thefts that the motorcycle may be subject to and Fully Comprehensive covers almost all eventualities that the policy holder may encounter.

Can I Take Out Any Type Of Policy?

By UK law, you have to have at least a motorcycle insurance policy in place that covers any third parties before you head out onto the public roads. However, there is no stipulation as to the type of policy that needs to be taken out, nor how much additional cover is available, further to the bare minimum that it offers

Is There A Recommended Level Of Cover?

Although it is generally the most expensive option in regards to the initial motorcycle insurance premium cost, if a Fully Comprehensive policy can be taken out, if offers the most protection of any policy and therefore offers the most financial protection in the event that an accident occurs.

As long as the claim is legitimate and is not included in the exceptions section of your policy document, a Fully Comprehensive insurance policy will generally be able to provide financial help, whether it is to repair the motorcycle or cover legal costs.

What Is The Best Way To Receive The Cheapest Motorcycle Insurance Quote?

Without doubt the best way to receive the cheapest quotes is to head online and use a few different comparison websites to find the best price. Do not forget to compare the excesses and any costs that are added if monthly payments are to be made, as well as any additional extras, whether they are required or not.

If you feel that the quotes offered are too high, give the insurance company with the cheapest quote a call as they will often be able to reduce your premium in one way or another, whether by taking off certain aspects, such as legal cover, or providing you with a discount for insuring another vehicle in the household.
