How To Write A Good Sales Letter?

By: Charles Godbout

The purpose of a sales letter is to persuade the reader to purchase the product or avail the service being promoted by the letter.

It is a written expression of persuasion. In fact, an effective letter is one that convinces its readers. It is the secret to marketing success of most companies.

A good sales letter has three objectives. First, it should aim to catch the attention of the readers. Second, it must keep the interest of the reader all throughout the letter. Third, it prompts the reader to make the immediate action, which is to make a purchase.

Admittedly, not everyone who reads the letter is convinced of the product to the point of buying it then and there. Several circumstances come into play including the availability of resources, and the necessity of the product. Nonetheless, the letter should deliver the first two objectives to the readers.

Your headline matters the most. It is the deciding point of the reader, whether to discard the letter or continue reading. This is where you focus your first objective.
The headline may compose of one to three sentences.

It should be compelling so that the reader may continue reading the sales letter. A good sales letter is straightforward and catches the attention of the reader.
If you have successfully grabbed the attention of the reader, it is important to keep it that way. The subsequent sentences should maintain the compelling tone of the headline.

The body of your letter must seek to educate your readers with important information. Mostly, readers are interested in knowing what is on the mainstream of areas to which they are interested in.

If you offer a product or service in your sales letter, you should introduce its benefits and unique features. Capitalize on its selling points. It is on this part that you create a need out of your product.

Provide your readers with compelling reasons to continue reading the letter, and eventually purchase the product. You can use bullet points to highlight the important information.

Finally, before you begin with your closing remarks, write a simple and strong sentence about making a purchase immediately.

Use attractive mechanisms such as special discounts when they purchase between a designated period. You can also inform them of special promo. In fact, a good sales letter uses promos and discounts to emphasize to the reads the limited discount and promo.

You closing remarks should be friendly. It should assure readers that it is of their best interests that you continue to be on the business. Understand that your professionalism should be evident all throughout your letter.

One attractive feature of a good sales letter is your opportunity to explain the characteristics and benefits of your products and services in the best way and length that fits your style.

Nevertheless, you have to remember that when your readers have read your letter, they should have observed your professional skills and ethics that although the product being promoted is not applicable to them at that time, your good reputation guarantees that your next letter will not go directly to their trash bin.
