Why Fully Comprehensive Motorbike Insurance Is Best For You

By: Christopher Reinhold

Having in place a motorbike insurance policy is a legal requirement in the United Kingdom and there is no choice to whether you can have a policy or not if you wish to ride your motorbike on a public road. However, all riders do have a choice when it comes to motorbike insurance and this is to choose which level of cover they require.

Available in three different levels, known as Third Party, Third Party, Fire and Theft and Fully Comprehensive, each option provides a certain level of cover, often with a premium to reflect the scenarios that are covered.

For the wide majority of people, the first two options, Third Party and Third Party, Fire and Theft are the cheapest levels of cover that can be purchased, as they offer only minimal insurance cover. Third Party in particular only provides the policy holder with the minimum amount of cover that they require by law, which is to ensure that they are covered should a third party make a claim against them further to an accident or incident taking place.

Some people often only believe they require Third Party insurance, but would prefer some additional cover in certain circumstances and this is when Third Party, Fire and Theft is opted for.

As the name of this cover would suggest, it provides insurance cover for all scenarios covered under Third Party insurance, as well as if the motorbike is damaged due to fire or is stolen, assuming that certain security precautions have been taken to reduce the risk of theft happening.

The final option is the one that is always advised and is known as Fully Comprehensive. In essence, this level of insurance will provide cover in almost all types of incidents, regardless of who is held liable if more than one party is involved or if no other parties are involved at all.

As the level of cover that Fully Comprehensive motorbike insurance offers is extensive, the premiums reflect this and mean that it can often be unaffordable initially to some. For instance, whilst lower levels of insurance cover may return a premium of three hundred pounds, a premium for Fully Comprehensive insurance could be in excess of five hundred pounds, as the increased cover needs to be taken into consideration and reflected for in the premium.

Whilst Fully Comprehensive motorbike insurance may be more costly initially, it can save a considerable amount of money in the long term when compared to other insurance options.

For example, if a person is involved in an accident, has their motorbike written off and only has a Third Party insurance policy, they will receive no financial assistance from their insurance company. However, if a Fully Comprehensive policy was taken out and the same incident happened, assuming that the claim was legitimate, the insurer would be able to provide money to either repair the motorbike or purchase a new one, to the market value of the insured motorbike, depending upon which was more financially viable for the company.
